From Airplanes to Airwaves

on August 21, 2010

The plane just reached a high enough altitude for the flight attendant to tell us that it is now safe to turn on all electronic devices… So here I am, on a flight headed to Philadelphia to begin my first radio tour! I am equipped with my guitar, a 1967 Gibson j-45 (that has yet to experience all that it should have, being the age that it is), a guitar player Jamie (who puts up with my shhhcrap and plays the heck out of a guitar), and a song that I wrote nearly three years ago called "Raymond." I could not be happier with where I am now and have been waiting for this opportunity for so long!

But I locked myself in a room with a guitar that first summer and started to force myself to play and write songs. The songs were far from good. In fact, I’d be embarrassed for you to hear most of them. But I guess they did serve a purpose. I started to get more and more comfortable playing the guitar and eventually started to collaborate with other young songwriters and friends.

I don't know exactly how it happened but eventually it just clicked.

And I almost got emotional, simply for the fact that I vividly remember writing the song and what caused me to write the song. I started to think of my grandmother, who has Alzheimer’s and who was the inspiration for this song. So I got on the phone and called her just to get to hear her voice and make sure she is at least happy, no matter how much she has lost. She still has the same smile and laugh that she has always had. At least we will always have that.

My grandmother’s Alzheimer’s became real to me almost
